Meet Alex

My career and education have taken a few more turns than I expected when I was younger. I was told not to return to sixth form and later left university during my first year. At that stage, I genuinely had very little idea what I wanted to do or where I was heading.

So, like a lot of young people, I just started working.

I joined Direct Ferries in a call centre and gradually progressed through supervisory and management roles before becoming European Office Manager. I was fortunate to have a mentor who believed in me, encouraged me and, when needed, gave me the push to stop making excuses and move forward.

In my late twenties, I decided to give education another go. This time, I was ready for it. I completed a BA in Management of Sport at the University of Essex, followed by a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status at the University of Greenwich.

I went on to work across mainstream secondary schools, Pupil Referral Units, specialist behaviour settings, SEN support and pastoral leadership. My experience also included sports-based interventions, staff training and around 15 months working at Chelmsford College.

I later spent nearly four years in education recruitment, helping candidates recognise their strengths, present themselves properly and find opportunities that suited them. That experience showed me how often capable people are overlooked—not because they lack potential, but because they need clearer direction, stronger presentation and somebody willing to keep them moving forward.

Looking back, being told not to return to sixth form, leaving university and not knowing what I wanted to do could easily have felt like failures.

Instead, they became turning points.

My mum and dad never stopped believing in me, and I also experienced first-hand what a good mentor can do: someone who supports you, challenges you and holds you accountable.

That combination of personal experience, education, recruitment and mentoring inspired TheJobFather. I know what it feels like to lack direction, but I also know how much can change when someone has an honest conversation with you, helps you create a proper plan and stands firmly in your corner.
